Patrick’s story

Remembering a son, a cousin, a friend, and the legacy he left behind.

Patrick was born in New Brunswick, Canada, where he grew up in a bright and joyful childhood filled with laughter, family activities, and endless curiosity. From an early age, he developed a passion for hockey—especially for the position of goaltender. Though he could barely stand on his skates under the weight of the equipment at first, his determination carried him far. By the final tournament of the season, he was named player of the game, a moment of immense pride for him and for us.

Traveling with Patrick gave us some of our most cherished memories. Together, we explored the Canadian Rockies, admired Niagara Falls before flying over them in a helicopter, discovered the Riviera Maya in Mexico, and lived his favorite family adventure at Walt Disney World in Florida. Later, he fulfilled a dream by visiting Japan with his friends.

Patrick loved reading. His maternal grandfather, passionate about history, could spend hours talking with him, and Patrick listened with sincere admiration. His sharp, spontaneous sense of humor lit up our days—one of the qualities we loved most about him.

We shared a strong and loving family bond. What he loved most were the family dinners on his mother’s side, where he shared a special connection with his cousins of the same age. Evenings often ended with board games and laughter. He also loved walking in the forest. We often joined him, but he also went alone, driving to national parks simply to enjoy the peace of nature. Adventure called to him—once, he even swam far from the shore, fearlessly facing the waves with the boldness that defined him.

His perseverance showed in the simplest moments, like the day he refused to stop practicing on the ski slopes until he mastered riding down the hill on his snowboard. That determination was part of who he was.

Service in Ukraine

Patrick left for Ukraine in February 2025. He completed a threemonth training course, and on May 27, 2025, he told us he was being deployed and would contact us as soon as he could. We spoke with him often before he left for the front, sharing our worries, our hopes, and our love. But that promised message never came. All summer, we waited without news, growing more and more concerned.

On September 3, 2025, we received the devastating news that our son had passed away.

A profound value in Patrick—one we only fully understood after he was gone—was his heroic altruism. At just twentyfour years old, he left the comfort of his life in Canada to protect people on the other side of the world, people he had never met. He expected nothing in return: no recognition, no reward, no glory.

On the front lines, under fire, he risked his life to save others. Testimonies describe how he helped evacuate the wounded, sometimes at the cost of his own safety. His courage was not driven by hatred or vengeance, but by a deep conviction: no one deserves to die alone under the bombs.

What guided him was not war, but the value that had always lived within him—the belief that helping others, even strangers, is a human duty. This is Patrick’s heroic altruism, a light that continues to shine far beyond his absence.

Patrick’s legacy lives on through the International League of POW/MIA Families of the War in Ukraine. His story continues to inspire our mission to support families, seek answers, and ensure that no one is forgotten.
