If you are searching for a prisoner of war (POW), a missing person in action (MIA), a foreign volunteer, or a civilian affected by the war in Ukraine, the ILPMF may be able to assist you by collecting information, coordinating with relevant organizations, and helping ensure that your case receives proper attention.

Who Can Submit a Request

Search requests may be submitted by:

  • Parents
  • Spouses or partners
  • Children
  • Siblings
  • Legal guardians
  • Authorized family representatives

If you are unsure whether you qualify, please contact us before submitting a request.

Every situation is different, but in general the journey follows these steps:

How the Process Works

1. Complete the Search Request Form

Please complete the Missing Person / POW / MIA Search Form as accurately as possible.

The more information provided, the greater the chances of assisting in the search, identification, or status verification process.

2. Gather Supporting Documents

Whenever possible, please include copies of:

  • Passport or identification documents
  • Military identification documents
  • Recent facial photographs
  • Full-body photographs
  • Photographs of tattoos or distinguishing features
  • Medical records
  • Dental records
  • Witness statements
  • Last communications, messages, photos, or videos
  • Death notification documents (if applicable)
  • Any other relevant information

These documents help establish identity and support search and identification efforts.

3. DNA Reference Information

DNA comparison may be critical in certain cases involving missing persons or unidentified remains.

If available, please indicate whether biological relatives can provide DNA reference samples, including:

  • Mother
  • Father
  • Siblings
  • Other close biological relatives

The ILPMF does not directly collect DNA samples but may provide guidance regarding organizations and authorities responsible for DNA collection and comparison.

What Happens After Submission?

Once your request has been received:

Initial Review

Our team reviews the information provided and verifies that all required documentation has been submitted.

Case Assessment

The case is evaluated and assigned a priority level based on available information and circumstances.

Coordination

Where appropriate, information may be shared with relevant humanitarian organizations, governmental authorities, military authorities, diplomatic missions, and other legitimate entities involved in the case.

Follow-Up

Families will receive updates whenever significant developments become available.

Estimated Processing Times

Initial confirmation of receipt:
Within 5 to 10 business days

Case review:
2 to 6 weeks

Search and coordination activities:
Timeframes vary depending on the complexity of the case and the availability of information.

Please note that the ILPMF cannot guarantee outcomes or timelines. Many factors remain outside the control of humanitarian organizations.
